• The newly issued DL is, according to Sec. 1 of Regulation no. 31/2001 Coll., On Driving Licences and the Driver Registry, as amended, a document in the form of a plastic polycarbonate card, sized 54 x 86 mm (the size of telephone or bank cards).  The background (core) is pink, fading into blue and white; the front top part bears the sign "ŘIDIČSKÝ PRŮKAZ ČESKÁ REPUBLIKA" (Driving Licence Czech Republic), the logo of the European Union, and the distinguishing symbol of the issuing country, "CZ".

• The data specified on a newly-issued DL (after 1 May 2004) is nearly identical to the data specified in the previous type (issued until 30 April 2004); however, the photograph and signature are now digitalised.

• The EC model DL is a document recognised for the driving of a car throughout the European Union, and as with the previous type, it is also recognised in other countries party to the “Conventions on Road Traffic" (Geneva-1949, Vienna-1968).

• The new DL is issued for up to 10 years, given the durability and legibility of the plastic card, or for a shorter period of time, due to, for example, health limitations on the competence of the driver.

• New DLs are produced centrally, as is the case of citizen identification cards and passports
