Over a month now, drivers with expired driving licence can apply for an exchange online via Citizen Portal using a data mailbox. Everything can be done from the comfort of your home in just a couple of minutes without a need to visit a municipal authority. From 1 June, ca. 6,000 drivers tried this new option.

“This online application for driving licences, together with introduction of e-vignette and launch of OneTicket on the railway are another step towards digitalization of the Ministry of Transport. We are already working on other simplifications for citizens, e.g. making exchange of a driving licence easier even in other situations”, said the Minister of Transport Karel Havlíček.

The data show that the initial interest has not been sudden and approximately one hundred people register every day. Especially in the busiest large cities, this also reduces the burden on office counters and the resulting waiting times for people who came to file the application in person.

“Each year, between 500 and 750 thousand people need to exchange their driving licence, which expired after the ten years validity. Now, they can save themselves from one trip to the municipal authority and apply for the new driving licence from the comfort of their homes. They just need to submit the application via Citizen Portal and then collect the new driving licence at a selected authority”, said the Minister.

The new feature eSubmission is available at the Citizen Portal. People can sign in either with eID, eGovernment mobile key, via data mailbox or a bank ID. The Portal displays a form that is pre-filled with data from the Central Register of Drivers. To send the application, the person must have their data mailbox of a natural person connected to the system. It will ensure a clear verification of the person submitting the application.

Currently, the Ministry of Transport works on another phase and other possibilities to exchange driving licence so that the process becomes more comfortable and efficient in the upcoming years. We plan to launch the option to exchange a driving licence due to its loss, damage, theft or destruction next year.

We also plan to introduce services designated mainly for owners and operators of vehicles, which will allow them to collect information about vehicles directly via Citizen Portal. This feature should be launched in September this year.
