The electronic toll system in the Czech Republic will introduce a new component of toll charges from 1 March 2024, which will take into account the CO2 emissions of vehicles subject to the charge. The change is introduced in connection with the implementation of Directive (EU) 2022/362 of the European Parliament and of the Council, which aims to promote further reductions in CO2 emissions.

The change in toll rates will affect all categories of vehicles. In addition to the existing three components of the toll: the road user charge, the traffic noise charge and the air pollution charge (according to the EURO standard), a fourth component, the CO2 emissions charge, will now be introduced. Five CO2 emission classes will be introduced in accordance with European legislation. CO2 emission class 1 bears the highest fees, while CO2 emission class 5 is for emission-free vehicles.

Vehicles with a first registration date before 1 July 2019 and all M2 and M3 vehicles (buses) will be classified in CO2 emission class 1 and are not eligible for a higher CO2 emission class (2 to 5, with lower fees). Their operators do not need to take any action, the classification is automatic.

"For hauliers operating vehicles with a date of first registration after 1 July 2019, we recommend checking the manufacturer's documentation and then using the search engine on www.mytocz.eu/co2 if they are eligible for re-registration to a higher CO2 emission class with a lower toll rate," said Petr Chvátal, Director General of CzechToll.

Checking the CO2 emission class of vehicles registered after 1 July 2019 is not compulsory for the vehicle operator. Operators will not face any penalties if they operate a vehicle that qualifies for a higher CO2 emission class but keep the vehicle in emission class 1. They can check and apply for a higher CO2 emission class at any time in the future, there is no deadline for submitting an electronic application.

Not all vehicles registered for the first time after 1 July 2019 meet the requirements for the higher CO2 emission class (2 to 5). It is essential that the parameters of the directive are met (which the CO2 Emission Class Finder will help verify) and that all necessary documents are provided. The CO2 Emission Class Finder will be launched on 20 January 2024 at www.mytocz.eu/co2

The new toll calculation method will be put into practice from 1 March 2024. The changes will not affect quantity discounts system.
