New D1: The first section measurement of speed of this year oversees traffic safety
3/4/2020Press releases

Starting from Monday, the first set of detection cameras on the modernized D1 will monitor if the 80-kilometre speed limit is observed. The six-kilometre section near Velké Meziříčí will collect data for the police, which will then send the committed offences to the relevant municipality with extended powers. Even this year, the aim of this traffic safety event is to calm down traffic in the narrowed sections and protect workers at the construction site at the same time.

Considerate drivers follow the rules, observe the speed limit, do not overtake unless they have to and pass through the limitations without any problems. However, then there is a small group of ruthless drivers who consciously disobey the rules and risk their lives and the lives of everyone around them. These speeding drivers who form about one percent of all drivers and cause tragic accidents and traffic complications, need to be targeted and calmed down in cooperation with the police and the competent municipalities that deal with traffic offences.

Apart from the measured section No. 19 near Velké Meziříčí, other section radars will be gradually put into operation between Mirošovice (EXIT 21) and Hvězdonice (EXIT 29) on modernised section No. 2 and also on section No. 16 between Velký Beranov (EXIT 119) and Měřín (EXIT 104). Gradual installation of detection cameras is also planned on section No. 7 Soutice (EXIT 53) – Loket (EXIT 66) and on sections 11 and 12 between Koberovice (EXIT 81) and Větrný Jeníkov (EXIT 104).

“The most common cause of accidents in limited sections is fast driving and crashing into temporary barriers, which can stop traffic in the respective section for hours. In this regard, the police are satisfied with the section speed measurement, because they are able to detect a large number of these cases in traffic,” says Jiří Zlý, the director of the traffic police. In recent years, the number of speeding offences has been around one percent of all those who passed through the section.

“A study of the behaviour of drivers in the closures on D1 showed that when the section measurement started, the average speed decreased by 5 kph. Fewer drivers also exceeded the speed limit. This reduces the risk of accidents, but also makes passing through traffic limitations smoother. If the vehicles move at a similar speed and there is no sudden acceleration and braking, the throughput of the motorway increases by 20 to 30 percent,” says Tomáš Neřold, head of the BESIP department.

Modernization of the D1 section from Prague to Brno is coming closer to its completion in 2021. This year, work will be carried out on the total of up to 71 kilometres of the motorway between Mirošovice and Kývalka, i.e. on all 7 remaining sections which are being modernized.

We are going to open another 37 km (4 sections) of the new D1 this year, so there will be the total of 127 kilometres finished, which is almost 80 percent of the D1 between Prague and Brno. The last 34 kilometres will be left for next year.

Collaborating with the Road and Motorways Directorate (ŘSD), BESIP prepared a series of training videos how to correctly drive through the sections with restrictions. You can watch all these videos on theFacebook profile od the Ministry of Transport or on the BESIP Youtube channel.
