The roof above the platforms of the Prague main railway station, that is subject to preservation, looks like new again. For the first time after a hundred years, it underwent a major reconstruction that brought new glazing, the restoration of damaged joints and an anti-corrosion coating. The repair of other parts of the central railway station will continue in the years to come.

After one hundred years, the Prague Central Railway Station has its platform roofing repaired

Over the entire existence of the hall, there was actually only one major repair in the 1970s, which involved only the removal of the old paint from the steel structure, the replacement of defective windows and some minor repairs.

"Now, after more than a hundred years, we have completely replaced the sheet metal roofing, all glazed parts, repaired and renovated the load-bearing structure, we made some parts such as footbridges, frames and railings again and the roof received an anti-corrosion coating. Besides repairing this historic monument, we increased the safety and comfort of passengers. They could feel already during the repairs that the platforms were getting more and more light," says the Transport Minister Dan Ťok.

The hall was built at the beginning of the 20th century and at that time it belonged to completely unique buildings in Europe. The reason was not only its dimensions of approximately 227 times 76 m and its height of 18 m. The steel two-bay hall is an integral part of the protected building compound of the Prague Central Railway Station. Its arched structure spans platforms 1 to 4.

The construction project involved the reconstruction of the hall drainage system, the reconstruction and construction of footbridges, including railings, a new glazing of skylights, side walls and the hall face walls, including the Fantova budova building shelter. The anti-corrosion protection of the supporting structure was also carried out, the roof cladding was replaced by a new one, joints were overhauled and damaged rivets were restored.

Further repairs of the main station will follow.

The repair of the Prague main railway station is not over yet. In August the Railway Infrastructure Administration SŽDC selected the design contractor for the repair of the historic facade and roof of the Fantova building. Also, work is under way on the first phase which involves the technical building survey.

A study of the railway station building interior shall be completed by the end of this year. The interior will change its face during 2019 and the expected completion is by the end of 2022. At the same time, the railway administration is planning to interconnect the main station with the Winston Churchill square by 2023.

The contractor of the project with the name "Roof reconstruction of the Prague Main Railway Station building, Phase II" were Metrostav and PROMINECON CZ. This is a phased project where Phase I was co-financed from the Operational Programme Transport (OPD) in the programme period 2007-2013 and Phase II was approved for co-financing from OPD in the 2014-2020 programme period.

The total investment costs of Phase I amounted to CZK 304,093,823 excluding VAT. The contribution of the European Union from the Cohesion Fund, as planned for Phase I, amounted to CZK 166,229,716. The total investment costs of Phase II amounted to CZK 386,150,942 excluding VAT. The contribution of the European Union from the Cohesion Fund, as planned for Phase II, amounted to CZK 261,920,823. National funding of both phases was provided by the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure.
