Tonight (25. 2. 2021), the successful operational transition closed a project to implement flying on free routes, so-called Free Route Airspace (FRA), known in the Czech Republic as FRACZECH. The Air Navigation Services of the Czech Republic used the current drop in air traffic caused by the COVID-19 pandemic to complete and implement this important operational project, which will make return to a normal development easier as well as potentially further increase an effective provision of air traffic services.

To put it simply, the typical “lines”, i.e. flight routes above flight level FL 95 (approx. 3 kilometres) will disappear from air traffic controllers’ screens and aeronautical charts. Compared to the previous strictly defined structures of flight routes, FRACZECH allows the air space users to plan their flight on so-called free routes between selected entry and exit point. The main benefit of FRACZECH is a more flexible and faster reaction to traffic flows’ changes and air operators’ requirements. It brings more variability in planning and in some cases straighter trajectory. Flight plan will better correspond to actual track.

It will also allow faster reaction on changes in a demand of the ANS users and help to keep our air space attractive. This is essential in times of a significant drop in air transport volume, when each aircraft flying over our air space counts.

The European legislation sets an obligation to implement FRA as a prerequisite for integration into a transnational FRA space, which will undoubtedly multiply the abovementioned benefits. It will significantly straighten the air traffic flow over Europe.
