Správa železnic (the Czech railway infrastructure manager) and DB Netz concluded an agreement with a contractor for project phase of a cross-border section of a high-speed railway from Prague to Dresden. Experts will shortly begin to work on document materials for the forthcoming tunnel in Ore Mountains.

Správa železnic and DB Netz commissioned the public tender, which is essential for moving the 30 km long tunnel in Ore Mountains closer to making it a reality, as a joint contracting authority thus continuing in a successfully international cooperation, which aims to complete this important cross-border section of high-speed railway.

Leading European companies undertaking in civil engineering in transport participated in the tender. The winning applicant was association of businesses led by an Austrian company ILF Consulting Engineers Austria Gmbh, which will prepare documentation for spatial planning decision for the tunnel in Ore Mountains connecting Heidenau and Ústí nad Labem. Foreign experts, who worked on similar construction projects in Europe, will work together with Czech experts. In a few days, they will start on the documentation, which should be complete in 2024.

The tunnel in Ore Mountains is a part of the new high-speed railway Dresden – Prague. Feasibility study expects it will be used for both passenger and freight transport, which will allow transferring up to 150 trains transporting goods from Elbe valley. It will reduce noise pollution around the existing railways. It will also dramatically shorten travel time between Ústí nad Labem and Dresden. Journey with an express train will take less than half an hour.

The forthcoming railways will be included in TEN-T network and will connect the Czech Republic to the existing high-speed railway system, which runs in Western Europe for decades. New railways will also increase capacity of the current ones and help to expand regional transport.
